2nd Florida Volunteers Living History, Inc.

The 2nd Florida Volunteers Living History, Inc. is organized to raise the public awareness of the history of the Florida Soldiers who fought during the War Between The States (1861-1865), and the civilians in Florida who lived during the War Between The States.  While the organization may branch out to include other time periods of Florida History at some point in the future, the primary focus is on the years 1861 through 1865.

The specific activities of this Corporation are as follows:

  1. Establish, Sponsor, and Govern Living History and Re-enacting units related to the War Between the States.  The first three such units that are part of this Corporation include:
    1. The 2nd Florida Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which portrays the Florida Soldiers who were part of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia from July 1861 through the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865.  By accurately portraying these soldiers, the Members teach by demonstration of what a soldier’s life was like during the War Between The States, and by holding training sessions throughout the year, the general public can get first-hand experience in what it was like being a soldier in the Confederate Army.
    2. The 2nd Florida Light Artillery Regiment, which portrays both Confederate and Federal artillerists during the War Between The States.  By accurately portraying these artillerists, the Members teach by demonstration of what an artillerist’s life was like during the War Between The States.  This unit conducts training programs in association with the United States Field Artillery Association of the US Army at Ft. Sill, OK each year, and while these programs are open to the general public for viewing, the programs are focused on teaching the proper drill and safety procedures of muzzle-loading cannons to other artillery reenactors and re-enacting groups in the region.
    3. The Civilians, which portrays the men, women, and children who lived in Florida during the War Between The States.  By accurately portraying these civilians, the Members teach by demonstration of what a civilian’s life was like during the War Between The States.

  1. Sponsor training and certification programs for reenactors and living historians that will teach proper drills and safety.  The first two such training programs that are part of this Corporation include:
    1. The School of the Soldier and the School of the Battalion, which teach the proper drill and safety for infantry re-enactors.  The School of the Soldier, which focuses on the various drills for the individual soldier, and the School of the Battalion, which focuses on the deployment of soldiers in the field, are necessary to provide an accurate and safe impression of soldiers during the War Between The States to the general public.  These training programs are provided before each major re-enactment and are open to the general public.  Individuals who attend this training can get first-hand experience in what it was like being a soldier during the War Between The States.
    2. The School of the Piece and the School of the Battery, which teach the proper drill and safety for artillery re-enactors.  The School of the Piece, which focuses on the various drills for the individual cannon crew, and the School of the Battery, which focuses on the deployment of artillery in the field, are necessary to provide an accurate and safe impression of artillerists during the War Between The States to the general public.  These training programs are provided annually and are open to the general public.  Individuals who attend this training can get first-hand experience in what it was like serving on a cannon crew during the War Between The States.

  1. Work with other organizations that have similar objectives.  There are a number of re-enacting organizations in this region performing similar activities.  Our goal is to work with those organizations to ensure a level of consistency throughout the region and to ensure that competing or conflicting services are minimized.  There are also national organizations, such as the United States Field Artillery Association, that we will participate with to ensure a level of consistency across the nation in terns of safety, drill, and publications.  This consistency and cooperation will help give a stronger and more accurate historical impression to the general public.

  1. The Corporation may add additional activities in the future as it deems necessary to achieving its historical and educations charitable purposes.
